|  Is romance making a strong comeback to Kollywood? “Yes” seems to be the answer as Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa is not only being appreciated but has also turned out to be a universal hit.
VTV has brought about a romantic revival in Tamil cinema which has produced some of the finest love stories in Indian cinema. Who can forget romantic films like Oru Thalai Ragam, Punnagai Mannan, Alaigal Ozhuvathillai, Mouna Ragam, Kathalikku Mariyathai, Kathal Kottai, Alaipayuthe and so many others? In a way Gautham Menon’s VTV is a throwback to the good old romantic films where there are no villains or item numbers. The audiences were also waiting for a change as they were fed up of an overdose of blood soaked “Madurai tales”. The most important ingredients necessary for romantic films is a simple story of passion and love, attractive lead pair who has some on-screen chemistry, narration told crisply, a tender lip-lock and above all, haunting music which will attract the youth. Now in the next two weeks two significant love stories with newcomers are releasing. They are Manickam Narayanan’s Magilzh Thirumeni directed Mundhinam Paartheney and Ayngaran International’s Angadi Theru directed by Vasantha Balan. Magilzh Thirumeni is a former assistant of Gautham Menon and understands the “feel and making of romantic movies”. He has made a love story with newcomers. The music of the film by Thaman is already a chartbuster. The film has been marketed uniquely by its producers and if luck favours them should work at the box-office.  Similarly Angadi Theru is a love story featuring comparatively new artists Mahesh and Anjali with music by GV Prakash and Vijay Antony. The director Vasanth Balan has last made the unforgettable love story Veyil, so a lot is expected from the team.
If both these films are accepted by the audiences and do decent business at the box-office it will open the floodgates for a romantic revival in Kollywood. |
